I think we've established, rather firmly, that while Thingie may be physically and developmentally ready to intake and process "solid" foods, he is not temperamentally ready.
Sweet potato met with the same reaction as potato, that is a screwed up face and a firmly blown raspberry. That last one I'd been warned to expect, and happily I was not standing directly in front of him when he sprayed the lovingly prepared, bright orange puree all over the kitchen floor.
He sort of looks like he's accepting it in the first photo, but really this one is more what it s all about.

He's learned that if he keeps his tongue out (not hard, it's mostly out all the time anyway), I can not get a spoon into his face. So if anyone has tips on how to make a kid keep his tongue in his mouth when it's feeding time, please do let me know.
For now, I don't even consider this feeding him. It's a game we play for 2 min each afternoon. We smear his face with sweet potato or parsnip (tried that too, verdict is the same from him, but I find it less likely to stain so it meets with my approval) and then wash him off. Fun times.
