No, Alexander isn't walking. But I bought him a toy to help him practice. We went to a huge-ass toystore on Regent Street, place called Hamley's, which is the English FAO Schwartz as far as I can tell. Four floors of kid related mayhem, including costume wearing adults and people blowing bubbles in his face (he wasn't keen).
I was looking for some kind of contraption that he can hold onto as he tries to walk and there were several models to test out. What we ended up with is not what I'd expected (I generally go for wood things and not garish plastic), but it has a few benefits. The little toy panel he's playing with below detaches so he can sit with it, and the whole thing can be reassembled into a little three wheeled push-along tryke when he's past using it to walk.

I wouldn't say that he has actually started to use it as a walking aid yet, but he's nearly there. Some steps are more controlled than others, and at least he's not putting all his weight on it and ending up on his face (like the first attempt) anymore. My main concern at the moment is him slamming it into the poor antique furniture our apartment came furnished with.
